What Does a Dental Hygienist Do? Costs, What to Expect and How Often You Should Go
Most of us know we're supposed to see a dental hygienist, but far fewer of us could confidently explain what actually happens in the chair, why it matters, or how often we really need to go. And if your last hygiene appointment involved cold water, scraping and tender gums, you'd be forgiven for not rushing back.
At Siha Dental in Shepherd's Bush, our dental hygienist appointments are designed to feel very different from the rushed scale and polish many people remember. In this guide, we'll explain exactly what a dental hygienist does, what an appointment involves, what it costs, and answer the questions patients ask us most.
What Does a Dental Hygienist Actually Do?
A dental hygienist is a registered dental professional who specialises in preventing gum disease and keeping your teeth and gums healthy. While your dentist focuses on diagnosing and treating problems such as decay, your hygienist's job is to stop those problems developing in the first place.
During an appointment, your hygienist will:
- Remove plaque, tartar (hardened plaque) and biofilm that brushing alone can't shift
- Clean away surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking
- Check your gums for early signs of gingivitis and gum disease
- Clean carefully around implants, bonding, braces and aligner attachments
- Give you personalised advice on brushing, interdental cleaning and the right tools for your mouth
That last point matters more than most people realise. Gum disease affects a large proportion of UK adults and is one of the leading causes of tooth loss, yet in its early stages it's usually painless and easy to miss. Regular hygiene visits are one of the most effective ways to catch it early, when it's still fully reversible.
What Happens at a Hygienist Appointment at Siha Dental?
Our premium hygiene appointments last up to 60 minutes, so nothing is rushed. Here's how a typical visit runs:
1. Consultation and oral health check. We start with a chat about any concerns, sensitivity or anxiety, and agree how you'd like the appointment to run, including a hand signal if you'd ever like us to pause.
2. Guided plaque revealed. We use disclosing technology to make plaque and biofilm visible, so you and your hygienist can see exactly where build-up is hiding. It means your clean targets your actual problem areas rather than treating every tooth the same.
3. Comfort-led airflow clean. Airflow uses a controlled stream of air, warm water and a very fine powder to gently wash away plaque, biofilm and staining, including between teeth and along the gumline. With warmed water and adjustable pressure, it avoids the two things patients dread most about a traditional clean: the cold and the scraping.
4. Targeted scaling and polish, only where needed. If any hardened tartar remains in specific spots, we'll scale and polish just those areas rather than working over every tooth.
5. A personalised home-care plan. You'll leave knowing exactly which tools and techniques suit your mouth, so the results last well beyond the appointment. As well as a discussion for joining our membership plan to have a regime for regular hygiene therapy sessions every 3 to 6 months.
Airflow Cleaning vs a Traditional Scale and Polish
If you've only ever had a standard scale and polish, airflow teeth cleaning is worth understanding, because it's the part of the appointment patients notice most.
A traditional scale and polish relies on hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler to chip and vibrate hardened deposits off your teeth, followed by polishing with an abrasive paste. It works, but it can be uncomfortable, especially if you have sensitive teeth or gum recession.
Airflow cleaning washes deposits away rather than scraping them off. It's gentler on enamel and gums, more precise around implants and orthodontic fixtures, and noticeably better at lifting external staining, which is why many patients find their teeth look visibly brighter after a single visit.
At Siha Dental, airflow is the foundation of ultrasonic debridement appointment, with scaling reserved for the specific areas that genuinely need it.
How Much Does a Dental Hygienist Cost?
Hygienist costs in the UK typically range from around £50 to £150 depending on the practice, the length of the appointment and the technology used.
At Siha Dental, our premium hygiene appointment is £129. That includes up to 60 minutes with your hygienist, an oral health screening, the guided plaque reveal, a comfort-led airflow clean, targeted scaling and polishing where needed, and your personalised home-care plan. There are no hidden fees, and you'll never be upsold treatment you don't need.
How Often Should You See a Dental Hygienist?
For most people, every six months is about right. If you're prone to build-up, have early signs of gum disease, smoke, or are undergoing orthodontic treatment, your hygienist may recommend visits every three to four months for a while. If your gums are in excellent health, once a year may be enough.
The honest answer is that it's personal, which is why we always give you an individual recommendation rather than a one-size-fits-all recall.
Can I See a Hygienist Without Seeing a Dentist First?
Yes, our hygiene therapists are not just hygienists, they've done additional training to spot tooth decay, oral cancer and, and handle more advanced cases of gum disease, as well see children.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a hygienist appointment hurt?
For most patients, no. Airflow cleaning is significantly more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish, and we can adjust the water temperature and pressure throughout. It would only hurt in our clinic if there is the presence of gum disease or recession or other issues like crack/cavities which will be screened for at the start, we recommend a comprehensive oral health assessment with our dentist which includes X-rays and 3D image scanning.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Bleeding gums are usually a sign of gum inflammation caused by plaque along the gumline, not a sign that you're brushing too hard. It's your body's signal to book a hygiene appointment rather than to brush more gently or avoid the area. Caught early, gum disease is fully reversible. It could also be more advanced gum disease, periodontitis, so it’s good to come in regardless. The management of this is slightly different, requiring deeper more localised cleaning around deeper pockets.
Will a hygienist whiten my teeth?
A hygiene appointment removes external staining rather than changing the natural shade of your teeth, so it isn't a whitening treatment. That said, many patients find their teeth look noticeably brighter afterwards simply because surface stains have been lifted. If you'd like to go further, your hygienist can talk you through whitening options.
Is airflow suitable if I have implants, veneers or braces?
Yes. Airflow is gentle on restorations and particularly good at cleaning precisely around implants, bonding, veneers and orthodontic fixtures, where traditional instruments can be harder to use. The particle size of the airflow powder is super safe and gentle. We also use special tips around implants to minimse risk of damage to the titanium.
How long does a hygienist appointment take?
At Siha Dental, up to 60 minutes. Shorter appointments are available at many practices, but we've found that a full hour gives us time to clean thoroughly, explain what we're seeing and make sure you leave with a home-care routine that actually works for you.
