What are braces?

Braces are the most well-known form of orthodontic treatment and have been successfully used to treat complex and significant orthodontic issues for many years. However, over time they have evolved and while today they are still offered in traditional metal, patients can also opt for ceramic braces which are tooth-coloured and more discreet.

Key benefits of braces:

  • Effective: fixed braces have been a tried and tested orthodontic method for over 200 years!
  • Complex corrections: braces can be used to correct even the most complex bite and dental alignment issues
  • Jaw alignment: braces can create better symmetry and balance in your face

How do braces work?

Braces have several elements. Firstly, there are brackets that are fixed to each of your teeth. Then there are wires and elastics that are fixed to these brackets. These are adjusted to apply gentle and consistent force to the teeth and jaw in order to move them into a more desirable position.

For braces to be effective, you need to attend regular consultations with our orthodontic team in Shepherd’s Bush to have them adjusted. Typically, an adjustment to your braces needs to take place every 2 to 4 weeks.

Metal vs ceramic braces

Metal braces are silver in colour. Ceramic braces are made from a tooth-coloured ceramic that makes them much more discreet. Both are extremely durable and work in the same way.

Tips for wearing braces

  • Follow the eating guidelines provided by our orthodontic team. There are certain foods that you must avoid since they could damage your brace.
  • Cut food into bite-sized pieces to limit the risk of damage to your brace.
  • Brush your teeth carefully at least twice every day and take your time since negotiating the brackets and wires can be tricky.
  • Consider using disclosing tablets. These highlight areas where plaque might be accumulating so you can target brushing more effectively.
  • If you need to, take pain relief on the day of your adjustment.
  • If you think your braces may be damaged, get in touch with us right away.

Foods to avoid when wearing fixed braces

There are lots of foods that could damage or get stuck in your braces.

  • Nuts, seeds and popcorn
  • Corn on the cob
  • Raw fruit and vegetables
  • Hard candies
  • Chewy sweets, caramel, toffee etc
  • Tough meats
  • Anything sweet; sugary treats are bad for your teeth even without braces

You should also avoid sugary drinks like sodas and energy drinks.

Are fixed braces right for me?

We usually recommend fixed braces for adolescents and adults who have moderate to severe tooth misalignment or problems with their bite. They can also be a suitable option for people who aren’t disciplined enough to wear a clear aligner solution for the recommended 22 hours per day.

Cosmetic issues that fixed braces can address:
Crooked teeth
Overlapping teeth
Gaps between teeth
Moderate/severe overbite
Moderate/severe underbite
Crossbite

Who is a good candidate for fixed braces?

Braces are a good smile-straightening option for most patients. However, if you have severe oral health problems, you may not be suitable for this treatment. Book your consultation to find out if fixed braces could be the right orthodontic solution for you.

Why choose fixed braces?

There’s a number of reasons why many patients choose fixed braces to help correct their orthodontic issues.

  • Widely suitable Fixed braces can be used to correct everything from mild misalignment and malocclusion, to severe orthodontic issues.
  • Fixed in place Since they are permanently fixed to your teeth, braces can’t become lost, and you can’t forget to put them back in. You don’t have to carry them with you or take them out to clean them.
  • Always with you While you will have to be careful what you choose to eat, fixed braces mean that you don’t have the inconvenience and potential embarrassment of taking them out for mealtimes or snacks.
  • Extremely effective Braces have been around for hundreds of years for a reason – they work!
  • An affordable option Braces are considered to be one of the most affordable orthodontic treatments. You can find out more about the cost of fixed braces on our fees and payment plans page.

How long will it take to notice the results of orthodontic treatment with fixed braces?

We know you’ll be keen to see the effects of your orthodontic treatment. While every patient is different, most can start to see a difference in their appearance in as little as 10-12 weeks. Most treatment programs with fixed braces take between 18 and 24 months from start to finish. Our orthodontic team may be able to give you an estimate at your consultation.
